beginner questions - hotspot and token

Hello all,

I am a newbie and i am trying to make a setup for

Hot spots then later implement internet access tokens

I have made a draft drawing for the setup i want to make (attached). wanted to ask some general questions atleast to have some information to start up

  1. I know i can use routerOS on my pc and this will host the OS. I need two NIC cards, i have a PC with one. are there particular specifications for the second NIC card? also are there specifications for the PC?

  2. I have ubnt unifi wifi access points and i would want to use their controller to ensure 1 SSID across all APs. has anyone tried this and can it work

  3. can the routerOS allow for tokens. i.e access based on time or Mbs?

  4. i can buy a small router for my tests instead of using a PC. will it give me the functionality of routerOS on a PC? This is only for demo purposes only

also please any links to resources/notes for initial setup and Hotspot setups?

Hi, I’m also a beginner to Mikrotik so I can only answer one of your questions. :slight_smile:

Yes, any Mikrotik router will give you the same full functionality of RouterOS limited only by the amount of RAM and CPU power. Metarouters will definitely be a no go on a hAP Lite. I think for learning and testing purposes an RB951Ui-2nD (64MB RAM) or RB951Ui-2HnD (128MB RAM) is a good start.
