BGP with BFD

At the moment we are statically routed, with all the failover between 2x GPON lines and 1x L2TP tunnel over 4G achieved using line state checks and ICMP Netwatch. Everything works great and our 2x /29 blocks failover statefully to each level of routing in a second or less.

We’re looking to move over to an ethernet provider who wants us to use BGP to manage the failover between their ethernet line and a GRE tunnel. The issue with this is failover time, so we want to use BFD to keep that time down.

I can see lots of talk about BFD in v7, but it seems the only sign of it in 7.2 is the ‘use BFD’ checkbox.

I bet there’s a huge amount going on behind the scenes, but could MikroTik please push to get BFD for BGP running in v7. Ideally with BFD echo compatibility as asking big ISPs to give custom configuration is quite difficult…

Many thanks,

James

I agree, this is definitely on the needed feature list for all routing protocols as many ISP networks are using it internally as well as for upstream peerings.

Currently we are working on BFD to bring it to you as soon as possible.

Thanks mrz. I don’t doubt that you’re working hard on it!

@mrz just want to ask if BFD was for 7.3.x or slated to 7.4.x? and also if i may check gateway via BFD instead of ping any insight please?

You will be able to check the gateway with BFD.

I would say that BFD most likely will not be ready before the v7.3 release.

thanks a ton, last question does bfd implementation does not have the same limitation with v6?,

it is hard to guess at this point what limitations it may have, but the main goal for the new BFD was to try to get rid of v6 limitations.

Can we get an update on this? For me it’s still not working in 7.4rc2.

Is there any time plan for BFD on 7.5 it’s not working ….

On 7.7 either… What is going on behind mikrotiks development team?

Is it so complicated to give some hint about when BFD will be implemented?

Sorry, but is BFD so rarely used, that mikrotik can give a sh*t about it?

We just also strongly vote for BFD…

Mikrotik should not call its products “routers” for ISPs without this feature! In ROS 6.x BFD is present and works, so why still not in ROS 7.x?

And btw, it is years now Im writing to Mikrotik for MPLS fast reroute... They dont give a sh*t about it too.

Yes! +1 BFD

Agreed, long overdue. +1

really needed +100

Lack of BFD support is the only reason we cannot upgrade core routers

What is taking so long? It has been almost a year since you said this, no movement yet, and I am not seeing any reason to believe that “working on BFD” means more than “it was mentioned during a meeting once back in 2021.”

Based on the latest posts, I understand (even if there are parameters under BGP configuration referring to BFD), it is not supported yet. At least in the latest 7.7.

at least, I tried to configure it, but I didn’t get the BFD working (connection refused).

Can someone confirm it, please?

You are correct, it still does not work. The parameter has been there since v7 beta, but enabling it does not enable BFD.

Still no BFD in ROS 7? Neither in roadmap? Quite a shame, Mikrotik…
