At the moment we are statically routed, with all the failover between 2x GPON lines and 1x L2TP tunnel over 4G achieved using line state checks and ICMP Netwatch. Everything works great and our 2x /29 blocks failover statefully to each level of routing in a second or less.
We’re looking to move over to an ethernet provider who wants us to use BGP to manage the failover between their ethernet line and a GRE tunnel. The issue with this is failover time, so we want to use BFD to keep that time down.
I can see lots of talk about BFD in v7, but it seems the only sign of it in 7.2 is the ‘use BFD’ checkbox.
I bet there’s a huge amount going on behind the scenes, but could MikroTik please push to get BFD for BGP running in v7. Ideally with BFD echo compatibility as asking big ISPs to give custom configuration is quite difficult…
I agree, this is definitely on the needed feature list for all routing protocols as many ISP networks are using it internally as well as for upstream peerings.
What is taking so long? It has been almost a year since you said this, no movement yet, and I am not seeing any reason to believe that “working on BFD” means more than “it was mentioned during a meeting once back in 2021.”
Based on the latest posts, I understand (even if there are parameters under BGP configuration referring to BFD), it is not supported yet. At least in the latest 7.7.
at least, I tried to configure it, but I didn’t get the BFD working (connection refused).
