Bizzare Mikrotik or maybe me

Hi

I am new to mikrotik and get hold 1 unit froma buddy of mine.

Power it up and assigned an IP address to ether1

Connects Ether1 directly to my laptop (which LAN interface has the same IP subnet as Ether1 on Mikrotik)

I am trying to ping it from this laptop to the ether1 assigned IP address resulted in ping time out.

From Mikrotik if i add a route which says 0.0.0.0/0 uses ether1, the ping works or without that route and did a arp ping test to my Laptop IP.

Why is that so?

what is the ip address and subnet mask assigned on each side ?

Are all the firewall filter rules empty or is the firewall blocking it ?
