block windows update

is there a way to block users from getting to windows update?

i dont have the smartest people in the world (what else is new) and the problem is they complain about slow internet when infact windows update is doing its thing in the background and slowing the connection thats already not so fast.

I don’t think this would be a good idea. Would you want to be responsible for someone else getting exploited because you weren’t allowing them to get critical updates from Microsoft? Why not tell them to set their computers to prompt before downloading and installing new updates?

Or you could just limit bandwidth to the update servers, or give those servers a lower priority.

Because they are ignorant in every sense of the word!
its not big a deal for these people to “Format and start over”.

I wouldnt know how to do that.

i was thinking of doing something like this:

[admin@MikroTik] ip dns static> print
Flags: D - dynamic
 # NAME ADDRESS TTL
 0 windowsupdate.com 127.0.0.1 827w5d14h...
[admin@MikroTik] ip dns static>

Bandwidth limiting and priorities/qos are discussed regularly on here, and you could probably search the forum for examples to adapt.

This has to be the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Why don’t you block AV companies while you’re at it?

wow thats harsh

as long as you’re on the antivirus topic then i’ll go ahead and bark at you like you barked at me

in my opinion antivirus software will never win.
all antivirus software does best is hog cpu cycles

and thats just my opinion.

good day!

and some people trust you with their Internet access… shakes head They say there’s always room to do something better than the other guy. Not hard in this case.

enable proxy than go
ip—web proxy—access–with + add new web proxy rule
type in patch filed .cab —action = deny
ok
