Blown Ethernet Ports During Thunder Storm

We lost four RB112’s to a thunder storm this week. The wireless side was not damaged, but the ethernet ports stopped negotiating with the client side. These boards were all housed in Pac Wireless rootennas. How can this be prevented, and what grounding measures are people taking to make sure that this does not happen. Any info is great!!!

Thanks

We had this problem with a site, we had a 1/2 assed ground on it (It was a bad day when we installed it). After we grounded the ant and mast structure PROPERLY, never happened again.

What brand lightning arrestors were you using on the Cat5?

we’ve had the same thing happen on a few 112’s and 532’s, all on towers that were not grounded.. my guess is that the tower, antenna, and routerboard build up a static charge, and then eventually it discharges through the ethernet port down to the PoE.

using shielded cable (with a shielded connector) may prevent this, but grounding the tower is top priority…
