Brand new network - noob

I want to build a completely new network at home and use MikroTik’s products. Since I am fairly new to networking, I would need some help choosing products. To start somewhere, I list some loose requirements that I have.

Bandwidth from IPS - 250 / 250Mbit / s
Wired connections - about 8
Wireless connections - about 15
Want the opportunity for IDS / IPS

Look elsewhere IDP IDS are expensive services found on more expensive devices.

For a simple setup like this, i would suggest an RB4011 or RB5009, for a switch a CRS112 or in case you need something more advanced then a CRS326 or CRS328 in case you need POE and for wireless Access Points CAP AC.

I would not recommend capacs for wifi, but this is not the place to put recommended other vendors products.

Why choose MikroTik?

Yes…I’m a big fan, but that has a reason.

Caveat MT (without IPS IDS)
For such a small throughput the HEX series router would do the trick.
The problem there is only 5 ports.
The RB4011 and RB50009 have the port numbers but are easily good to well over 1Gig throughput up and down so a tad overkill.
Consider hex plus cheap managed switch to cover off the xtra needed ports.

For the same price as the hex, the hapac2 has better specs and wifi (which you can turn off, not use) and its good up to 1gig throughput.
For a bit more the hapac3 also has better specs than the hex and slightly better wifi than the hapac2.

I would go for either of the two hapac models and if the wifi is not acceptable enough (at a certain range its not doing the job) consider getting a business class AP.

@anav, a Router should always be able to perform better than the actual requirements…At least that is they way i think it should be…
Today the OP will use an ISP line of about 200Mbps, right ? And what if tomorrow, in a month or in a year the ISP will be updated to 500Mbps or 1Gbps Line ?
What if VLANs come into play ?

I would not recommend capacs for wifi, but this is not the place to put recommended other vendors products.

We are in a MikroTik forum and the OP wants to get a MikroTik product… So ofcorse i will recommend one …

The requirements are for the OP to decide not you.
Our job is to inform of capabilities and limitations. He currently needs what 250 up and down?
The Hapac2 or 3 is quite capable of 1gig so that is future proofing.
If the OP thinks that in 5 years he will need more then he can make that investment now or wait five years.

What about vlans. My hex handles VLANS with aplomb, perhaps your configuring them wrong. ;-PP

As for recommending, what an assinine approach, to recommend something because you are in a particular vendors forum.
Most sane people will recommend products that work well (if supplied by the vendor) and not mention products that dont work well. Concur
that this is not the place to advertise other vendor products but its certainly reasonable to state there are better values for the money and more important better performance.
The last thing one should do is recommend crap knowing its crap regardless of vendor.

You should note my first response was to inform the OP that Mikrotik didnt meet his requirements due to the IDS IDP, which is the responsible thing to do.
I found your initial response and other responses to be disingenuous and rather distasteful.

@anav, the OP can as well go to https://mikrotik.com/products the product page and check the Test results for any device…
That way, he does not need neither my opinion nor yours…
So, when someone asks for a recommendation , i guess he needs something more than what he can already find on the Products spec page…

So yes, hap ac2 meets the requirements, but as an engineer i guess i should be able to look and think a bit further…
I did not define the requirements… i said my personal opinion which is based on experience…
A hap mini can perform about 250 Mbps too, why don’t we suggest it?
That does not make your recommendation neither bad or wrong…

In a MikroTIK Forum, when someone wants a MikroTik AP i will indeed suggest a MikroTik AP yes…
It would be out of topic to suggest something else…
