Bridge vs master/slave?

I am a bit confused as to the the difference between a Bridge interface and using the master/slave functionality.

Is there any performance difference in using one over the other?

When bridges are in use all traffic is handled via CPU.
When master/slave is configured, the switch-chip handles local traffic without loading the processor.
