If rather then assign an IP I am routing through too ether1 I assign it too bridge1 which has ether1 in it. How much additional overhead is associated with that?
routerboard.com has the routing and bridging performance for each model for the different scenarios (conntrack, IP firewall).
My personal rule of thumb: if I find I need to bridge traffic I should be getting a switch involved.
