Am looking into ways of proving Internet to Multi dwelling units and wireless is proving to be a tough choice which brings me to using Broadband over power line (BPL). Which vendor or equipment will work well with Mikrotik routers. I want to create a bridge from the router to each unit.
describe what you mean by “multi-dwelling”
Before you even consider BPL, you need to check your country’s and/or local council conditions for this.
BPL has been known to cause havoc to short-wave frequencies used by hobbyist like radio-hams.
In the US, an entire estate was made BPL, but it caused so much interference to the short-wave frequencies that a very small group of radio amateurs lobbied their council. The council was forced to remove the entire installation, costings tens of thousands of dollars.
1: check within your neighbourhood for local radio-hams.
2: Far better option is leaky feeder.
In any event “solwise.co.uk” can offer both solutions. And you can google BPL for the interference fiascos.
Hi,
HomePlug (broadband powerline) is based on Layer 1&2 and no any problem will exist with any router, switch. I have no idea on the regulations in your country so it might be good if you give more detail about the envorinment for the best possible solution.
Note that, if HomePlug seems (?) the only solution, you should consider:
- using the same device from the same vendor. Using different products from different vendors might cause problems.
- There is a limit on the number of HomePlug devices that can work on the same power line.
- multiple phases do need extra device.
- Intellon chipset is the best in my opinion (Atheros has acquired Intellon)

By multi-dwelling i mean http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-family_residential.
What is the maximum number of home plug devices that can be interconnected?
Hi,
Hardly remember but around 64 for Homeplug Turbo & AV chipset from Intellon… Now higher speeds available…
