Broadband Speed Tests

Hi All

A quick one hopefully.

I’ve been challenged by a broadband speed test (www.speedtest.net) reporting much slower speeds than that of the MikroTik bandwidth test and could do with understanding how it works…

So a bit of background…We have a WISP network running and very nicely infact, to validate speeds i’ve setup a MikroTik CHR in our datacentre, plenty of resource and bandwidth to act as a bandwidth speed test server; totally separate from the WISP network, just on the internet.

When I run a speed test from a client site on the WISP to the MikroTik CHR I am getting a nice consistent 70Mbps and its barely tickling the CPU of the CHR (lots of resource)…when we run a speedtest using speed www.speedtest.net we are getting 20Mbps…am I missing something?

speedtest.net results are all over the place, it all depends on latency, server type, config, bandwidth etc.

A proper way to do a speedtest is to do an iperf to the location you want to get to.
