I have my primary home router sitting in virtual machine inside VMWare ESXi 5.1u1. Backup router is RB493G, VRRP failover.
I also have LTE modem (yota. Something called LU100, but i should verify it)
I decided to “bypass” LTE modem to VM with RouterOS (was 6.2 in moment of test)
Added USB controller (no problem with that)
But when i tried to bypass modem itself, ROS crashed into kernel panic.
Live/Hot “bypass” - instant crash.
Cold “bypass” (to powered off machine, then boot) - crash at boot.
Not sure what caused it, LTE modem or ESXi USB implementation.
you can check this by adding different USB device and attempt to pass it. However it is not completely clear what Vmware does to “pass” the device, so it might be also, some incompatibility problem on how that is done.
I will verify that when i get home.
But i can confirm that this modem was working on 6.x beta (RC) on hardware (RB493G) router.
About VMWare, i have some linux/windows VMs with bypassed USB devices, ROS is only one which crashes on bypass, so it may be bug in kernel drivers.
