I’m trying to use my mAPlite as a cable tester but when I test the RJ45 interface using a 3’ cable with nothing on it I get a 0m short reading.
I was expecting a 1m open reading. My RB751U-blah blah blah (Normis your model numbers don’t fit on a 22" screen…) shows 2m open. A 100’ cable shows 29-30m.
My $150 tester died and I can’t get it fixed because the company that made it is out of business. This is a great DTF (distance to fault) device for the size.
The first day I bought my tester I had a home client with no internet from his office jack. The tester show a short at 7’ on one pair and the others OK at 50.
I went to the far end and got 43’ for the short.
Since the home was new the builder called in the drywall crew figuring it was a screw into the cable. They only had to punch a 6" hole to find fault, it was right where the tester said it would be. The drywall guy said he had this type of problem before but never got any distance info and often had to punch a number of holes to find the problem.
updated 10.11.19 - The cable test feature seems to work for open cables over 1 meter, a 10’ showed 3m and a 100’ showed 33m, but when I shorted one pair the test failed to detect it.
