I am looking for an easy emergency “cold standby” backup device when my CHR is not functional. Hence speed is not important.
The hEX Lite or RBM11G are the most cost effective solutions. Ideally I would like to rackmount them but if I get the RBM11G I need case, power supply etc all separately. hEX would just work and if needed, there seems to be 3rd party rackmount ears.
But will hEX be at least functional with: 10 VLANs, 2 bridges, 5 wireguard tunnels, 1 OpenVPN tunnel, VRRP, OSPF, BGP (not full table, just one route), DHCP server/client, DNS, tens of firewall rules incl NAT, connection tracking, mangle and multiple routing tables (policy routing) ?
If I go for the RBM11G, is there a good case, maybe even rackmount? Back in the day when I got my RB850 there was a rackmount case even on Mikrotik website but seems nothing is available..
With all of your config, even if backup solution doesn’t have to be fast, any HW you throw at will struggle if flash and RAM are not large enough. hEX lite with 16MB flash and 64MB RAM is a bit tight. RBM11G with its 256MB RAM should do better but 16MB flash will be equally tight. You may want to have a look at hEX which is essentially RBM11G in a case and with PA supplied.
Personally I’d have a look at “wireless for home and office” devices, there are quite affordable and capable devices (and you can always disable wifi interface if that bothers you). One example would be hAP ax lite which comes with 256MB RAM and 128MB flash, suggested price similar to prices of hEX and only slightly slower according to test results.
