I’m designing a home network with wired infrastructure during renovation. Can MikroTik CRS328-24P-4S+RM function as a sole device, or do I need a supporting router? How do I set up the connection with my Cisco modem, and what configuration should I use?
CRS devices are switches by design. However, if they run ROS (as opposed to SwitchOS), they can do routing and firewalling.
But: as they are switches by design, their routing (and firewalling) performance is poor. Official test results indicate that your device may be able to route around 300Mbps of traffic (all directions combined), give or take.
If you want to get some usable advice about connecting to Cisco modem, you’ll have to provide some concrete information about that Cisco thingie and how it’s used in your current network setup (assuming you have a working network setup).
