Can Mikrotik do it?

I have some projects to accomplish from 2nd to last quarter of 2009. I am new to mikrotik hardwares hence and I want to try the much talk about Mikrotik products. Below are my proposed projects:

  1. PTP distance of 20KM Los
  2. PTP distance of 32 KM Los
  3. VoIP between three (4) sites
  4. VPN tunnel between (4) sites

I am starting with item 1. above. i.e PTP. The aim is to extend my land to a remote location of 8 PCs 20KM LoS from hqtr. A throughput of 16 to 54Mbps is desired. It is an existing link that is currently down. I had course to change 2 radios within the span of 12 months and it is driving me nuts. I definitely need a change in hardware.
What type of Mikrotik product can best fit in to 1 above?
Any solution for item 1 above may equally apply to item 2. I intend to follow the projects the way it is listed above.
Can someone please proffer solution?
I have gone through many threads on this forum and I must confess that it is indeed a very helpful forum. Please keep on the good work.
Regards.

I am going to assume you have 2 or 3 foot dish antennas already in place since this is an existing link. Are they 5GHz antennas?
Have you determined why your current radios are failing? What brand and model where they? Water or lightning damage?

I would use RB411AH routerboard, R5H radio, good metal outdoor box like DCE-H-7x6x2, and a lightning suppressor in the box. You will also need an MMCX to N-Female pigtail cable, a short LMR400 cable with N-Males on both ends, a waterproofing kit and good 24 vdc POE power supplies.

Two of the above (one for each end). Make sure that they are properly grounded and waterproofed.

Yes, the same model gear will work with both PtP links. The difference will be more height and larger antennas for the longer link.

You should be able to pick that up from a Mikrotik distributor in your country and they might be able to assemble it for you as well.

Good luck,

Tom

Thank Tom, let me respond to your queries in the order raised.

  1. Yes I have 3 feet 5GHz antennae.
  2. The failures are suspected to be largely due to 80% lightning strikes and perhaps 20% water damage. We have just improved on the lightning protection system at all the sites.
  3. The radios used are mainly RAD products e.g Airmux 200 Basic.

Does the package come with the lightning suppressor you mentioned or is it an optional requirement?
What is the maximum distance (KM) the RB411AH routerboard can go?
I will first of all make enquiries and find out the availability of the specification you suggested in my locality.
Do you have suggestions on the VoIP and VPN stuffs?

Once again, thank you for the prompt response.

Regards

Lightning suppresors are not made by Mikrotik. They are optional third party devices.

I don’t know of any limitation on distance other than signal strength and clear LOS and fresnel zone. Use nstream protocol for longer distance links. The distance setting is automatic. Mikrotik users are running links longer than 50km. Search the forum for “longest link” and you might find more details.

Mikrotik supports VPNs and you can set QOS for voip in the firewall. I suggest you look at the wiki for more details.

Good luck,

Tom
