Can Ping Access Point from Server but not Mikrotik box

Would anyone know why I could ping my access point from a “hotspot bypassed” server, but not from the MT box itself?
I have been trying to get port forwarding working for some time to this IP, and just realized that I cannot even ping the AP from the MT box itself.

Couple facts about my network-

  • Everything as far as hotspot works correctly, users can connect to AP and login via hotspot
  • The AP is connected directly to an ethernet card in the mt box
  • This ethernet card is a part of a bridge so other traffic can reach it
  • As I stated before I can ping from a server that is also on this bridge, but not from MT box…?


    Any help is appreciated.

Is the AP bypassed? If not, it won’t be able to do anything past the Hotspot controller until it is. The server is bypassed, it can ping the gateway .

Strange that I would need to bypass since MT box should be able to talk to anything on its interfaces (at least from the MT box to the device I would think). The AP card is in the bridge as well, but I suppose the hotspot is assigned to that… hotspot has been working without bypassing AP so far.

I created a bypass for the AP (and it is now pingable from MT) BUT…

…wouldn’t that mean that any traffic coming from that AP (i.e. Wireless clients) would just be bypassed and not required to login? I definitely don’t want to do that if thats the case… I know it is bypassed by the mac address but will this be ok to do since macs are stripped off and rewritten as they go down the line? Wouldn’t that mean that all traffic going through that AP would be sent to MT box with the MAC of the AP?

Thanks again for any info, I just can’t go onsite right now and don’t want to open this up for everyone on accident.

If you are natting the AP, then yep. Otherwise, nope. Cause the traffic on your ap is going though your AP, not from your AP.
