can't establish a link

Hi,
i tried setting up a point to multipoint wireless connection between two points just 4.69km apart and got no response.i.e i could not link up with the ap.i can ping both the lan and wireless cards of my cpe.my configurations are as follows:

client radio:
(RIC/522) 5.1-5.8Ghz Integrated Router Antenna
5.2-5.8 GHz 22dBi Integrated flat panel antenna
R52 wireless card
power supply with PoE

Access point:
(RB/APO) MikroTik 5GHz Access Point OUTDOOR Package
which comprises of :
RouterBOARD 532, Outdoor Case
RouterOS Level 4
802.11 a+b+g 65mW Wireless miniPCI card
5.7-5.8 GHz 10 dBi Omnidirectional Antenna

i have earlier successfully used this same equipment for point to multipoint connections with maximum distance of 1.79km.i can see other aps even farther than mine when i run a wireless scan but i don’t see mine.Any suggestions on what the problem might be?

Id.

If you run a scan from the AP do you see anything? It could be your AP has failed or you’re using the wrong antenna connector.

Did you try the units on a test bench first to see if your config is OK when the devices are only a couple of metres apart?

Assuming your Omni is vertical polarisation, you’ve got the CPE set for vertical polarisation too? i.e. make sure AP and CPE have same polarisation.

I had a similar problem on a 6Km P2P link, using horizontal polarisation I couldn’t get a link no matter what I did. I then switched to vertical polarisation. With R52s and 26dBi panels both ends theoretically I should have an EIRP of 36dBi with the wireless TX set to 10dBm, but I got no link. Even set at full power, theoretical EIRP 43dBi I still got no link. I changed the wireless cards to Senao 8602s with these set to 10dBm I got a link. For some reason the R52s don’t seem to give the rated maximum output. I have noticed at another location using 2.4GHz units using R52s or Wistron CM9s with Routerboards they report a received signal strength some 12db lower than other vendor’s CPE, e.g. SmartBridge.

Hi cmacneill,

thanks for the reply.when i run a scan on my AP i don’t see any other device.but i know the AP is ok cos i currently have about 7 CPE’s conneting to it of which the farthest is 1.79km away. Both antennas are vertically polarized so it can’t be a polarization issue.any more suggestions?

thanks.

Hmmm… very strange, I don’t understand how the other CPEs can be working if you can’t see them in a Scan.

I’m suspicious that the R52s don’t actually put out 65mW, I had to use a different Wireless card on my 6Km connection to get anything to work.

I assume you have set the MT Wireless mode to “ap-bridge” at the AP and “station” at the CPE?

It might be useful to post your entire configuration so we can check you haven’t set something wrong.
