Can't get PPPoE client working...

My DSL ISP is SBCGlobal. They require that we use PPPoE to access our “static” IPs. Our DSL modem is an older Netopia Cayman 3220. I can get it to authenticate to SBCGlobal’s PPPoE and get an IP address/gateway. I can then configure it to disable NAT and DHCP and basically use it as the gateway for my Mikrotik router.

However, this approach is not ideal for a few reasons:

  1. There is no “back IP” assigned to the DSL modem which will make administration more challenging
  2. This makes the DSL modem consume one of our public IPs

I was hoping that I could configure the DSL modem so that it bridges traffic without needing to consume an IP. I also wanted to stop using the PPPoE client in the modem and use the PPPoE client in Mikrotik. However, I couldn’t get it to work.

I connected the public interface of Mikrotik to the DSL modem. No IP addrses or default route was added. I then added a PPPoE client to the public interface and put in the username/password that I was issued. The PPPoE client just keeps on saying, “dialing… disconnected” over and over. I can’t figure out why its not working. I did try turning on the packet sniffer built into Mikrotik and i saw PPPoE discovery packets being sent, but I didn’t see any responses.

Bump

I have the same setup of what you are trying to do…

  1. The MT will need to have 1 of the static ip addresses bound to the interface where the DSL modem will be plugged into.
  2. DSL modem will need to have 1 of the static ip addresses bound to it.

Thus, if you signup with DSL for 5 public ip addresses you will have 3 left over.

As for administration of the DSL modem i have never had that problem since the modem has a static ip address which i can access through the MT.

Oh by the way you want to turn off NAT on the dsl modem and do the pppoe connection on the DSL modem.

This is what I ended up doing to get things working – however, I never managed to get the PPPoE working on Mikrotik — I am still using the PPPoE client of the modem. Did you have any luck with this?

Well the problem is you need to be able to send the pppoe authentication through the phone line of the modem and the dsl modem doesn’t take the pppoe authentication from the MT and send it through the phone line.

To my believe i was never able to get it working plus i don’t even think its even possible.

Is their a option on your DSL modem for bridge mode? If yes, set it in bridge mode, then setup MT as PPPOE client with your username and password. It should work!

Mr G

that was what I was trying to do first, but I’ve had no luck. I don’t know much about PPPoE, but I’ve yet (i.e. whether the DSL modem was in bridged mode or how I have it now – basically serving as a router … NAT disabled) to get the MT PPPoE client to work. It just keeps saying dialing… disconnected…

When I ran a packet sniffer, it looked like it was creating traffic but not getting a response…

Ya it has to do with the DSL modem and the way that the firmware was designed. I personally never found a way around it.

One idea i have it get you hands on a really old dsl modem that allows the client behind the modem to do the pppoe authentication. I think the really old speedstream dsl modems that SBC used to use before they signed with the devil 2wire allowed this.
