Can't log in after 6.42.9 upgrade

I had set our router up to automatically upgrade when there was a new bugfix version. Since the update to 6.42.9 I can no longer log into the the router and can’t reach the internet. Can’t even use the MAC address to connect via Winbox. So I’m trying to understand what happened. I started looking on a spare router and I noticed the warning to back up but I’m not sure why I can’t log into the device again. I had already configured a software bridge so I thought that I could at least get back in to restore but I can’t do anything. I was able to reproduce the results with the test router (both are 2011’s) so I know it’s the update. I can reset it and reconfigure it but I would like to understand a little more about what happened.

Can you connect via serial port?

Thanks for your reply.
I’ll have to get the cable at work. In the meanwhile I reset one router and I was surprised to find that when I logged in there were no default firewall rules. It’s a been a couple years since I set up the rules from scratch. Took a couple of minutes to get it working but I find this version of Routeros is different in many ways. For example my little LCD displays the local IP as 192.168.88.1 even though I am not using this IP and it no longer appears in IP->addresses or IP-> routes… strange.

With two rb2011s you could create a nullmodem cable between them.

Have you created partitions? This could explain the sudden configuration blackout (booting from another partition for whatever reason).

No partitons were created. I ended up installing the current full version instead of the bugfix and that solved everything.
