I just got my first MikroTik product, a CRS304-4XG-IN, and I can’t get into the admin account. I get an “Authentication failed: invalid username or password.” message.
I use the account “admin” with the password that is on the bottom of the unit (and the card that came with it.) I’ve checked the password a million times.
I’ve also tried using WinBox, with the MAC address.
This is probably one of those cases where I would be better off using Windows than Macintosh, sorry to say. If I can’t get this sorted fairly quickly, I’m going to have to send it back. and look for a different brand, which would be a shame, as this is the perfect switch for me otherwise. FWIW, I’m on MacOS Sequoia 15.1.1.
I may try that, but it seems to me that if I’m getting similar results from the browser method, and with the WinBox beta I’m using on the Macintosh, that the problem lies elsewhere.
Have you tried all options of characters that look like I or O? You probably have but I need to ask. I sometimes photograph the password, then prop the phone up next to the screen having zoomed in on the text, just to be sure I am doing it correctly.
I use a current Mac to log in with Winbox 4 without a problem. Try Winbox 3 just to exclude it although I doubt 4 is the issue.
I don’t think that the issue is related to the macintosh vs. windows or linux.
Check that the MAC on the label is the same as in the paper leaflet and the same one as the MAC you get in Winbox, while it is possible that a device has been exchanged during manufacturing/packaging, it is - I believe - impossible that the MAC and password are mismatched.
There are several characters that can be easily misread, like oO0, Il1, G6, B8, S5, Z2, so, even if you already checked it a zillion times, try again, with a magnifier or thaking a picture of the label and then magnifying it.
I remember a couple of reports of people that needed to reset the unit before being able to access it, you can try that, you have nothing to lose.
Or it may be the opposite. I’ve received my brand new wAP ax and initially the password from the sticker worked, I’ve used it to log in using winbox 3.x. The first thing I did was execute “reset configuration” to empty … and password did not work anymore. Netinstall was next step and since then, I don’t care about factory default password …
I started out bt taking a picture of the info card and the bottom sticker. The info card is maybe 6 point type, so that was a must.
I’ve tried swapping O and 0 in the password, and I’ve checked for 8 B swaps as well. Those are really the only characters that can be confused in this password.
The MAC addresses match between the label and WinBox.
I’ve tried resetting the router using the little switch on power up.
In short, I’ve run out of ideas on how to fix this.
