I have a RB750 set up as a SOHO router for my network at home and have set up my firewall and services according to the guidelines on wiki and Greg’s video tutorial.
I haven’t had the need to ping ping anything outside my router for a long time and now I suddenly find that this is not possible anymore. I have tried to enable the disabled services and also disabled the rules in my filter that I thought could bloc outgoing ping’s, but haven’t found it. Anyone here who could give me a tip where to look, so I don’t have to start all over.
Block ALL firewall rules and check again.
Can you access internet hosts, browse web sites from LAN side?
Did you check your routes?
What is your internet connection/provider?
I would start by disabling all rules. You said the you disabled the filter rules that you thought would block outgoing ping, well it could still be something blocking the incoming response. Disable all and re-enable one at a time.
I still haven’t figured it out yet. So far I tried:
disable all “drop” s in my firewall. I also reset the counters and could see that with the rules enabled. The firewall filter does not drop any packets when i execute a ping.
I tried to enable all services under IP/Services and this didn’t fix the problem either.
So with all filter disables and all IP/services enabled I am still not able to ping anything on the public side.
I can browse everything and lookup any url or IP in my browser. That all works fine. I am also able to ping everything on my LAN side.
I cheked with my provider and they confirmed that they have not set up any rules that would limit my access to the internet and/or have any influence on my ability to ping IP’s on the public side.
I will try tomorrow morning to replace the router with a standard router, just to check if I then can ping public IP’s
If you have any hints before I start messing around testing with other routers then please post them.
