CAPSMAN: Howto CAP AC XL -> CAP AX migration?

I though it might be as easy as before to integrate a CAP AX into my CAPSMAN network, but it is not.

Any hint how to add a CAP AX into my existing CAPSMAN configuration to replace CAP AC XLs?
My understanding is that wifiwave2 has to be installed on the CAPSMAN server, which is a CCR2216 on my site, but then the CAPSMAN menu is gone.

Legacy wifi APs (using wireless package) and wifiwave2 APs (like AC3, Chateau, … but also all AX devices) are not compatible.

So … if you want to migrate one by one, you’d need 2 capsman controllers. One for legacy, one for wifiwave2.
In the wifiwave2 setup, there is no separate capsman menu anymore. It’s all integrated in the wifiwave2 screens (but coming from old capsman, it shouldn’t be too hard to figure things out, it’s very similar).

Thanks for the clarification. Do I understand correctly, that I need two CAPsMAN installations if I want to use CAP AC XL and CAP AX in one network?
Two installations means two separate MikroTik routers?

Thanks

That’s exactly what I said, yes.

Dear all, my question is little bit connected with the original question above, so I decided to post it here.
I have older device (hap ac3) configred and in use and newer device (hap ax3) waiting for to be added to network. First I opened Winbox GUI of ax3 and I was surprised that the settings of wifi looks different. I checked ROS version and on both was the same current stable one. Then I uninstall Wifiwave2 package to match to look and all wifi interfaces on ax3 disappeared  and then I rtfm. Just mention one note, sofar I did not dig in CAP/CAPsMAN etc. and I always used single device configuration.
So I found out that to match the look of wifi settings on both models (ac3 and ax3) I need to install on both routers the Wifiwave2 package as it is also the future as I understand. Now my question. Is it ok to just install in older ac3 the Wifiwave2 package and just rebind to the original bridge (which was created by me and contains all the interfaces in local network) new Wifiwave2 wifi adapters (because the legacy ones disappeared)? I mean, will anything be hanging out there deep in configuration regarding legacy adapters? What is the best or recommended way how to keep original settings ac3 as interfaces, bridge, routes, ntp, firewall, dhcp, vpn, users etc. and install Wifiwave2 package? If I understand right there is no special step, just install package, reconfigure wifi adapters, wifi security and config and it is ready to go as before. I just do not want to go through all the security settings what I made in past and check whether they are still there (as blocked services etc.).

Thanks a lot, your vpoikl

Correct. Just add wifiwave2 package, reboot, handle the new wifi interfaces and done.

Pro tip for anyone with a mixed AC/AX network. You can even run the CAPsMAN v2 on one of the cAP AX devices, so no extra hardware is needed.

Thanks for useful information and tip.

How to install wifiwave 2 on older mikrotiks? I have a RB962UiGS-5HacT2HnT that i’m testing with, but cannot get it to install.
This is the model that i would like in the end to run both Capsman v1 and v2: CRS125-24G-1S.
Thanx

According to documentation here: https://help.mikrotik.com/docs/display/ROS/Wireless

To run both capsmans on single device you need these packages in RouterOS 7.14.2:
routeros + wireless

Yes that is correct.
There are two different section now:

Wifi in regards to the new drivers
Wireless - > in regards to the old ones…

thanx!

I would (and have) upgraded my XL’s to 7.14.3 in combination with the wifi-qcom-ac driver. Then a single CAPsMAN instance is required for ac and ax. As a bonus you would have better wifi as well.

But if you wander into wanting a guest VLAN for example, I’d stick with legacy CAPsMAN/wireless as setting up a VLAN almost negates having CAPsMAN at all IMO.

I tried this today, but I’m not sure if it works. Each instance of CAPsMAN sees his own cap. But you can have two instances of CAPsMAN on a single device.
If you managed to have a single CAPsMAN that will connect both ac and ax CAPS, please tell me how

Even easier, no capsman!!

Because you don’t know how to use it ?
Again, there is more then only the Anav way.

I use multiple VLAN’s, just follow the instructions.

https://help.mikrotik.com/docs/display/ROS/WiFi#WiFi-CAPsMAN-CAPVLANconfigurationexample:

Pay special attention to the wifi-qcom-ac remarks.

It is not that hard to accomplish. There are tons of reasons to go this way. And it is indeed not the anav way.

No worries, I like a straight road, without curves, cliffs, mudslides, falling boulders etc…

Without CAPsMAN will there be correct Roaming? How many access points do you have?

Sure, as long as SSID/all security settings are equal. Just not as fast/sophisticated as you get from using CAPsMAN.
