I recently decided to upgrade my network to 10G (awaiting the offering of 10G internet by my provider in the near future). I got myself a CCR-1036-8G-2S+, which I’m using now on my current 1G internet. That’s working fine, with an S+RJ10 going to my current 1G switch over 20M of CAT6 cable.
Now I replaced my switch with a QNAP QSW-1208-8C 10G unmanaged switch, expecting the connection to go to 10G. But it doesn’t; it connects at 5G. And the CCR claims its link partner isn’t even advertising 10G, just 10M - 5G. As it’s unmanaged, there’s nothing I can do at that end (and also weird, the QNAP isn’t supposed to be able to do 10M…).
What I tried:
Only advertise 10G. Result: 5G.
Only advertise 10G & autoneg off: Result: 5G(?!).
I would have expected no link, certainly in the second case…
Anyone seen something like this before? I could swap the stuff out for two 10GBASE-SR SFP+ and some OM3 fiber, but the CAT6 is already in place. Could be the cable isn’t up to snuff (although it’s prefabricated and only 20 meters long), but the ‘missing’ 10G advertisement and weird test results bother me.
I almost forgot: I’m running RouterOS 6.45.6.
