I have some questions regarding cooling of CCR1009 in PC variant. It’s relatively powerful device, passively cooled unlike rackmoount version and also has a bit downclocked CPU. Passive cooling is quite static from hardware point of view as there’s no equivalent of increasing fan rpm, so here are 2 questions:
Is it possible to overclock it in system settings back to 1.2ghz or at least something a bit higher than 1ghz if I mostly expect short peak loads (few seconds)?
How CCR1009 in PC version handles overheating?
By 2. I mean - lets say router is highly clocked and ambiet temp is really high and there’s long load (lets say 6h) so passive cooling might not keep up - how RouterOS will react to this? Is there any form of thermal throttling like in x86 CPUs so router keeps being functional or it just features some kind of emergency shutdown after reaching critical temp or it could just get damaged?
Very interested in the answer to question two as well. I’ve been thinking of deploying these for SOHO use where devices with small loud fans aren’t appreciated. But it can get quite toasty inside the telecoms closet where it would likely be.
By default, all routers have a setting to reboot at 100C CPU temperature. You can set it yourself to a different value:
/system health> set cpu-overtemp-threshold=100
We have tested these units in ambient room temperature +70C and it was working fine. If you manually set the reboot temperature to more than +100C and keep the room temperature above +70C for longer than 6 hours, some things will most likely start to glitch and at some point, possibly melt of burn, depends on how high your oven will go
The rackmount model has variable speed fans that strive for a set CPU temperature, so when the router
is not loaded and the outside temperature is low the fans are running slower than when the outside air is hot
or the load is high.
