Hello guys, new router was added to our network 1 week ago, it is a cloud router ccr1016, yesterday i noticed the memory was 760 MiB, i thought that i have heavy traffic that caused the memory to run down but there was no such traffic, i went to system resources and the total memory was 916.5 MiB, it’s like one of the rams is not working.
Today i called the dealer to tell him about what i had and he was on the defensive position from the beginning, long story short i have to deal with this problem myself, so i removed the upper cover to see what’s going on there, i removed the 2 rams and then re plug them back, started the router and checked the system and the memory was 1939.3 MiB, i thought it was something related to transportation that caused one of these memories to move a little and stop working.
The bad news is that the memory is now 916.5 MiB again ![]()
Can someone tell me what’s going on with my router please? how can i fix this?
By the way, the router was and still making a whining sound when first started, is that normal?
I mean a whining sound not a beep like how normal it does when rebooted or just started. So now i made things clear for you to understand what i mean by whining.
If is a series of shorter bips, is ok, many routers do that. The memory is so cheap and the router is so expensive that is better to be replaced by you or leave 1Gb if not needed.
The whining sound you hear is the fans. When the board is cool, or just booting, it only sends a small amount of power. This causes the fans to squeal a bit.
The memory is hopefully just a bad module. Personally, I would recommend picking up two new modules (they are really cheap) and giving them a try. I put two 8GB so-dimms in mine, as I happened to have them on hand.
It seems to be like how you mention it. To be more accurate it sounds like the beeper is by-passed with low voltage that cause it to whine.
Since it has a multi core processor, will it run okay with a single channel memory? i don’t need that much memory but indeed i need much stability.
Hi Dave, as i said in my reply to InoX it sounds like the beeper is by-passed with low voltage that cause it to whine, so is that okay/normal?
Are they the same modules that are used for laptops? i had a call with my friend and he said that these modules are special made for servers and routers and are not compatible with laptops, is that true?
They are the same. They are just normal DDR3 SO-DIMMs. 1333mhz I believe.
As for the sound, my CCR1016-12G makes a whining sound quite often. Unplugging the fans stops it for mine. It’s not a problem for me, as the router is in a 62ºF room. I also have an RB951 that makes a “clicking” sound. I don’t think either are anything to worry about.
I will post back and let you know the results.
i will take the router off the rack at 5 to 6 AM since i have no much traffic at these hours, and see what can i do to fix it.
Thank you all.
looks like one memory module have poor contact
maybe a cleaning of the memory slots with some product can help and clean the memory modules contacts with a pencil eraser to clean it
in the case of ccr1016 losing one memory module not only reduces de amount of memory, a disconnected memory module in CCR 1016 and 1036 reduce memory bandwidth to a half, certainly that can reduce performance in a high throughput scenario
if after cleaning the issue persist maybe you have to consider RMA the device
This could be the most weird thing to say since the first day of networks, i did not have to remove the router in order to inspect the rams, so far after i changed the cables that are attached to the router to cat 6 the memory was back to 2 GiB ![]()
I was monitoring the router all the day and so far all what i see is 1939.3 MiB all the time ![]()
I don’t want to even think of putting the old cables back to see if they were really the cause of this. Could they??? ![]()
