CCR1036-8G-2S+EM dead

I had a CCR1036-8G-2S+EM drop dead.

First it started throwing thermal CPU messages in the log 5 days ago. 1 reboot. While it seemed fine and cool in its perfectly clean 72F indoor environment. If you looked at health its CPU temp would start increasing slowly from power on. With no cpu%. Sitting on a bench with nothing but a laptop plugged in. It started this with no changes in settings or thruput after like a year of operation.

Not always. It would sit there fine for hours, then suddenly start going up till reboot.

Fans are fine.

It finally just died. No power light. Its out of warranty so I investigated. The power supply was fine. Putting out 24V. Green LED lit.

Further investigation showed its switching supplies on the board were not all on. It seemed, maybe, a 3.3V was done.

Ordered another.

This was pretty weird that a supply on the board failed. I suppose the CPU could have failed and is holding the power rail from starting up ?

Either way its dead. Just wondering if these might have any issues anyone has seen ? The unit is in a home. Its not under duress or under any serious load in any way.

weird..

Its this chip I assume ? http://www.mellanox.com/related-docs/prod_multi_core/PB_TILE-Gx36.pdf

Its one of those chips that the datasheet is secret. Does anyone have a link to the actual datasheet ?

Has anyone else seen a CCR just die ?

Hi,

We have not had any fail in the way you describe.

You should email support@mikrotik.com with the symptoms you are experiencing, they should be able to help you diagnose it.

what do you mean you havent seen one died? It seems the CCRs have been used with lack of knowledge about computer maintainance.
With the CCR there are 3 things i did to get mine running well.

  1. changed thermalpaste (i used to best i could that was good or CPUs and GPUs)
  2. modified cooling, i probably have the only silent CCR1036 running
  3. changed PSU, PSU is external resulting in cooler ambient temperature in CCR case.

So while i dont run my CCR on max as in UK internet speeds are embarrassingly slow that it doesnt even register 1% CPU usage and it is ofcourse summer but when it isnt summer or if you have a well cooled room you can run a silenced CCR on max.
