We are a small ISP.
Now we are upgrading our transit from 500Mbit to 10Gbit.
We also upgrading our core router to a CCR1036-8G-2S+
The only job for the router is to forward L3 traffic to different customer subnets on different VLANs. (no NAT, no firewall)
Is the CCR1036 capable of forwarding 10Gbit from one 10Gbit port without Fast Path or Fast Track?
We dont use fastpath or fasttrack today. should we use it in this case?
Fasttrack is firewall feature, so not applicable in OP’s use case. And I think fastpath is enabled by default in all cases where possible. Anyways, I wouldn’t expect CCR reach the benchmarked throughput … my gut feeling is that the benchmark result which fits the real life the most is the one for testing routing with 25 filter rules and for medium sized packets and for this particular router the number is slightly lower than 12.5Gbps. In OP’s case one might take the figure for routing without firewall which declares almost 27Gbps.
All in all it seems that this router should be able to push those 10Gbps as it will only route between VLANs and WAN. Note that it won’t come near 10Gbps for speed tests (running low number of parallel connections), but for real-life traffic mix of many clients it should get close to wire speed.
you cannot project performance from cero experience and testing
you have to test, specially for that kind of extreme scenarios jumping to 20X capacity
forecast performance is unrealistic in that kind of situation, what now works at 500mbit maybe when you hit 1, 2 or 3 gbps found a bottleneck of some kind
