CCR2004-16G-2S+ cold weather performance

Hello,

I’m inquiring to see if anyone has used a CCR2004 in any cold weather environments as the recommended operating temperature range is -20°C to 60°C. I have a tower site that doesn’t have any heat but has a building next to tower where equipment is housed. We can see temps get down to -40°C in the colder months. I am trying to get away with not adding heat to the building. It currently has an RB1100ahx4 in it (-40°C to 70°C) and has been great! I need SFP+ to support addition of some 60ghz RF that is faster than the 1gbit ports on the RB1100ahx4. The current RB1100ahx4 has a minimum of 150mbit and a maximum of 600mbit of traffic through it 24 hours a day, with 60+ NAT/MANGLE/Filter rules along with 75+ simple queues. Has anyone had any experience with operating one of these at lower than recommend temperature range closer to -40°C?

Thanks,

No experience with running in those temps, but my biggest concern would be condensation. Electronics rarely hate being cold, but condensation can destroy them.

I currently have switches and RB1100ahx4 running there for years in these conditions, I think adding a small heater would only introduce condensation problems because of temperature differentials. I’m trying to get away with not adding a complete climate control HVAC system.

Maybe when there is not much air circulation it will keep itself warm enough…
We have one in the server room (airconditioned) and its CPU runs at 54C even though the fans run at 4800 rpm.

No need for heating

I once had a computer (not powerfull) in a cold garage. It was put in an insulated box, with a temperature-regulated fan. When it got very cold, the fan stopped, hence keeping the heat.
