CCR2004-1G-12S+2XS with 6x S+RJ10 - fan noise

Hi,

I'm using a CCR2004-1G-12S+2XS running RouterOS 7.23.2 with six genuine MikroTik S+RJ10 modules.

Ports in use:

  • WAN
  • RB5009 uplink (currently negotiated at 2.5 Gbps)
  • Deco AP
  • Unraid server
  • PTP link
  • IPTV

I already tried:

  • lowering the RB5009 uplink from 10G to 2.5G
  • spacing the S+RJ10 modules apart with empty SFP slots
  • updating RouterOS and RouterBOOT to the latest version

These changes reduced the fan speed significantly, but the fans still ramp up as the SFP temperature increases.

My question is not about the S+RJ10 operating temperature itself (I know 70-90°C is considered normal).

I'm interested in whether anyone is successfully running 5-6 RJ45 SFP+ modules in a CCR2004 and has found a quieter solution.

  • Have you found any compatible RJ45 SFP+ modules that run cooler than the MikroTik S+RJ10?
  • Has anyone compared FS.com, 10Gtek, or other brands?
  • Are there any other recommendations to reduce fan noise when using multiple RJ45 modules?

Unfortunately, switching to fiber is not an option because my whole house is already wired with Cat6A.

I'd appreciate hearing from anyone running a similar setup with multiple RJ45 SFP+ modules in a CCR2004, including your typical SFP temperatures and fan speeds.

The S+RJ10's will make the fans on anything ramp up. CRS317's, CCR2116's, CCR2004-PCIe, etc.

I put Noctua fans in my 2116/2004's that are on the bench, which helped with the noise, but they will still ramp up with those things in them.

And yes, I also use modules from other vendors, or other switches with a mix of copper 10/5/2.5/1 ports and SFP+ ports. I have a mix of brands 10G copper SFP+ modules I've found on Amazon that all work without turning the fans on. They do get hot, just not as hot as the RJ10's.

Thanks, that's very helpful.

Could you please share the exact model numbers or links to the RJ45 SFP+ modules you're using?

I'm looking for cooler alternatives to the MikroTik S+RJ10, especially for a CCR2004 with multiple RJ45 modules.

Have you noticed a significant difference in temperatures or fan noise compared to the MikroTik modules?

I tested about 8 different SFP modules including MikroTik S+RJ10 module.

I stopped using the MikroTik module. It just runs to hot!

So far, I like this SFP module SODOLA SFP Module SL-10GET2

Temperature stays around 51 C - 53 C

See link below.

Amazon SODOLA SFP Module link

Thanks! That's very interesting.

Could you please tell me which MikroTik device you're using the SODOLA module with?

Also, are those temperatures at a 10G link speed?

RB5009 at 10G

That's a huge improvement compared to the MikroTik S+RJ10.

Just to make sure - was the SODOLA module around **53°C in the same RB5009 where the MikroTik S+RJ10 was around 90-100°C?

How long is rj45 cable?**

Patch cable to SODOLA 10G switch.
