characteristics for a pop router, and opinion about first design for a new wisp

I would like to start a WISP.
But at the beginning I don’t want to invest in core network with CCR, FW, CGNAT ext.
For the beginning, I would like to lease a 500Mbps line from an ISP, with /28 subnet, to my first POP, and use wireless from there to residential customers.

customers CPE will probably be “hAP ac2”
every group of 5-10 customers will be connected together with L2 switch (most likely RB260GS or GSP) and a 60Ghz link to the POP.
internal network (CPE to POP) will use the 100.64.0.0 address space.

For this connection I need a router that would be installed in my POP, with a default route to the internet.

This router should support:

  1. 200-300 customers (I would like to think I can get to 500 :smiley: )
  2. PPPoE server for all 300 customers
  3. Firewall for all the 300 customers
  4. NAT for all 300 customers. I’m thinking of using one public ipv4 address for a group of 64 customers

Now for my question:
Where can I check which MikroTik router platform can support these requirements ?
And I would like to hear your opinion regarding the network design.

check Mikrotik official website, each product has a test result section, I generaly see the routing 25 filter rule 512 bytes more close to real throughput:

I would say the RB4011 should fit if your budget is tight but would suggest a basic CCR for your core network.

also worth speaking to your local Mikrotik distributor. They should give your best advise to get your business for the long term.

THe only thing I would add is that if you are a business with many clients I would
a. have more than one ISP (redundancy when needed and lots of throughput for most of the time)
b. have dual hotswap capable setup if one router goes U/S for any reason the hotswap router kicks in./

My local distributor doesn’t have enough knowledge.
I was offered to consider the RB1100AHx4 as well.

Anav, in order to make a hotswap setup, I need to add two switchs no ?
