Chateau 5g vs LTE12 lte1 connectivity to cell towers

I actually don’t know if this is more an observation than question but I’ll still post it for other’s reference too since 5G is still mostly empty talk (at least in most non urban areas).

I’m having both LTE12 (RouterOS 7.2) and 5G (RouterOS 7.11.2) routers with 5G external MIMO antenna connected (and both modems are setup to use them explicitly) and I’ve noticed some funny behavior regarding their connectivity to cell towers. Also for reference my LTE/ISP provider supports only LTE connections (no 5G).

Now what is happening (both routers are using the same antennas pointed in the same direction and same SIM card) is that Chateau 5G is connecting to cell tower that is much further away than Chateau LTE. In other words Chateau LTE is behaving much better than Chateau 5G on LTE. I get it that Chateau 5G is for 5G connections but in my understanding it should be backwards compatible with LTE, but obviously its not handling them the same way LTE12 does.

Since it obviously makes a huge difference I’m afraid to upgrade Chateau LTE to newer lte modem firmware as well as newer RouterOS, so my actual question is if someone has any experience on this matter and knows if it would be safe to upgrade lte modem firmware and RouterOS, since I guess modem firmware cannot be downgraded (or at least I figured out there is no official firmware repository).

Generally my attitude is not to mess with something that is working but still I’m a bit curious.

Curious too so subscribing to follow the responses.

And yes, modem firmware can not be downgraded (but it might be possible when you contact support, they should have a way to do so).

If I’m not mistaken the external ANT connectors on Chateau 5G are connected to the modem for the 5G bands only (it should be for N78), while for LTE part the modem uses its internal antennas.
While Chateau 12 uses those external antennas for the LTE part, so signal will be much stronger that in the other case, especially if tower is further away.
There is diagram on internet where you can see the internal wiring of Chateau5G and those connectors are not attached to LTE.

Thank you! This explains a lot! If only I knew it before purchasing Chateau 5G.
