I share a network with a user who is constantly seeding hundreds of torrents and degrading the network performance terribly.
I’m currently using a DD-WRT router and attempting to shape him as his abuse of the network is causing pain for the other users on the network.
The router I’m using can’t cope with the connections and is constantly flooding and causing lockups, network slowdown etc.
I’d like to replace the router with something that will handle their Bittorrent seeding and will also adequately shape them so that their seeding doesn’t exceed 25% of the egress bandwidth.
I would like to do this for as cheap as possible, currently I’m looking at the RB751U or the RB2011UAS-IN - I’d pretty much bet that the RB2011UAS-IN would cope with this task but would the RB751U?
There are about 5 constant users on the network but only one box that is seeding blindly, so would anyone have a recommendation for the cheapest Mikrotik router that will handle the amount of flows from his seedbox?
Currently I’ve got the following spec in the DD-WRT box but as I mentioned it is being completely killed by this user (when he is active), do you think the RB951Ui will be ok for this task?
root@linksys:~# cat /proc/cpuinfo |head -5
system type : Atheros AR9130 rev 2 (0xb8)
processor : 0
cpu model : MIPS 24Kc V7.4
BogoMIPS : 265.42
CPUClock : 400
root@linksys:~# free -m
total used free shared buffers
Mem: 29356 16520 12836 0 1868
-/+ buffers: 14652 14704
Swap: 0 0 0
Looking at it again, the spec of the RB951Ui seems quite a bit better actually, it has 128MB of RAM (vs 32MB in the DD-WRT box) and also the CPU of the RB951Ui is 200MHz faster (400MHz vs 600MHz).
Do you think I’ll be able to shape the user adequately with the RB951Ui?
