I currently have a Dlink 4100 w/ Cisco Aironet 1100 AP router. I was directed over to this site as I hear good things about MikroTik routers.
Looking for some advice and recommendations on which router I should get.
This will be running in my home with 3 media centers, 1 gaming computer, media server and 2 video phones. I tend to use torrents a lot and at the same time using videophone.
So what I’m looking for is a router that can handle heavy sessions / bandwidth along w/ good wifi support, (G, N preferred).
Other thing I should add is the router will be placed in the basement of my 2 story home. So would like good signal strength on the top floor.
Most any new MikroTik can handle anything you can throw at it in a home situation without any problems at all. What kind of bandwidth do you have at your home?
With that being said, do you want to completely replace the Cisco AP? Also how many Ethernet ports do you want?
A 493 will get you 9 Ethernet ports, and up to 3 wireless cards can be installed. There is a wide choice of wireless cards you can get for it as well depending on your needs. A 433 will get you 3 Ethernet and 3 mini-pci slots for wireless cards.
If you want more of an integrated solution, the 751 should be available soon. 5 Ethernet ports and a wireless card built in on a plastic case. The 493, 450, 751 etc also all come with a switch chip, so you can get wire speed switching between ports. The 700 series usually has ports 2-5 already on a switch chip for you, where as the 400 series default is to have each port it’s own routed interface.
I plan to replace the AP w/ an integrated solution. As of ports, at least 2 since I have a 24port switch on my lan. (note: I’m in processing of adding network cables to each room in my home.)
Since you mentioned the 751, I came accross these…
hi all,
i’m planning to get (RB751U = RB751-2n + USB) once released,
but what would you use the usb port for is it more router memory storage, NAS storage, or also you might use it for external 3g modem connection.
i just want to clarify this for my self. thx
