Complete overhaul of Existing network

Hello,

I consider myself average technical as far as networks are concerned. I currently have OpenVPN running on a server (supporting at most 5 concurrent clients).

I want to overhaul my old home network. My plan is to convert my ISP provided modem into a bridge and use own-equipment for all network functions and security. I would definilty require port forwarding functionality.

I currently have 3 APs to cover my house. Metrics (other than for diagnoses) are not important to me.

I just became aware of Microtik and would appreciate if someone can help me with:

  1. Do Microtik devices have a GUI or a script based interface to configure them?
  2. Can someone please suggest a combination of Mirotik devices that would provide me with a Firewall with support for OpenVPN on the device and 3 x 2.4 / 5GHz APs. PoE would interest me (depending on the additional cost).
  3. Do Microtik have the ability to develop a MESH-type network such as one being advertised. How does it work?
  4. **** Most importantly **** would I need a rocket science degree to set them up. I am familiar with subnets and VLans but that’s as far as I go.

Thanks
Alan

Thanks for your input.

Give that I’m not interested in becoming a guru then I should look elsewhere.

Elsewhere… For sure you should start with wiki documentation first and then come to us with questions about details you were not able to understand. Or should we forsee what details you might want to know and distile it for you? Don’t be afraid to become a guru just by reading the wiki… On the other side it will not harm you.

Frankly speaking/writing In the Mikrotik’s universe Wiki is the “official manual”.
