In version 7.6, the configurations of applications running in a container, kept in an external folder,
were accessible via e.g. samba. In version 7.8 files are no longer accessible, everything “disappears”
in a “container disk”. How can I copy, edit, save etc. the configuration files?

I suspect you’ve been caught by the disk renaming stuff in 7.7 and 7.8, so the old config no longer mounts the intended disk. The files are therefore ending up inside the container, not out in external storage. Rebuilding the container with proper ROS 7.8 disk names will solve it.
If you absolutely must get access to the existing files, messing about with “/container/shell” commands may get you into the container long enough to rescue the data.
