Configuration Suggestions Please

Our comany have 100 users connecting to the a router (currenlty a Linksys WRT120N) via four wireless APs. The router can’t handle the workload and doesn’t allow user management. We have a x86 server we want to use to replace the Linksys router. The server have two LAN cards and will be connected to a switch to link to the APs.

What we want to achieve:

  • We want to be able to split the users in three groups; one group must be always have internet, the other two groups must have internet at specific times only, on a rotating basis.
  • Each group must have their own bandwith limit set per user.
  • The users must preferable be controlled via their MAC addresses as we want to use DHCP.
  • The users will roam between the APs thus, can’t be controlled via AP.
  • Preferrably must there be very little interaction needed to set up the user’s device.
  • Unknown users should have no internet access.
  • Specific websites and services must be blocked, like YouTube and torrent downloads.
  • Internet usage data must be kept for each user; their bandwidth usage and websites accessed.

We did tests with basic router set up of RouterOS, and now currently we are testing to use the Hotspot funtionality. Our knowledge of MikroTik and other Linux systems are very little and outdated. We don’t ave a second server to collect logs for like Ntop.

Please provide your suggestions on the best RouterOS configuration to use to achieve our goals. We haven’t purcased a license yet as we are not yet sure wat level will be required (basic RouterOS system we migt only need a level 1 license, for Hotspot we will proabaly need a level 4).

Your assistance will be greatly appreciated!!

Since that is a fairly tall order, and very specific, you should probably contact a consultant to configure this for you. Consultants in your area are listed on the Mikrotik web site. I think it’s not realistic to expect a community to configure all this for you, specifically as this is for a business case.

Thank you fewi

On Sunday I decided to we should go for a Linux Firewall distribution package rather. It was set up with a lot more ease and have all the functions included that is needed.

I will keep MikroTik rather to network distributions.

Best Regards
