I always thought setting connect rates in CPE was decisive as long as the rates were supported by the AP.
So if AP has set 6, 9 and 12mb but CPE only 6 and 9 than CPE would not contact at 12Mb…
But now, it looks like it doesn’t matter what I set in station/CPE.
I have AP set to 6, 12, 18 and 48M and CPE only to 6 and 12.
But register on both end show (with traffic) that CPE still connects with 48Mb! Both up and down!
I use 5Ghz 10Mhz channel and NV2 enabled and in use on AP (and thus CPE’s)
ROS 5.4
Any clues? (I don´t want to revert back to old software only for to see how it was before. Units I now in production…)
I think NV2 over-rides CPE data rates and will set it’s own speed but as you mentioned if AP is set to 48 then thats the speed the AP will try to use on all CPE’s, i have set my AP’s to 24 but it took me some time to figure out why my CPe’s would not connect when i tried to change wireless protocol to 802.11 from NV2 they all had “any” in protocol and used to before, had to set the AP data rate back to “default” on the XR5 cards then using 802.11 the clients would connect?
hmmm, you could be right.
I think this might also be a reason MT is developing a new rate selection algorithm. See what the results will be in the near future.
Actually my AP networks worked best with NV" when CPE’s had all rates set to ´default´ and AP only had one rate set (and same rate for ´basic´ as well!). It worked fine until I had some networks that had both high speed demanding clients as some marginal signal connected stations in one AP range.
Since I also use 10Mhz now (which halves the actually data throughput) I needed 24 or higher as connection rate (which means 48Mb setting) for the demanding clients while the weak clients couldn’t even connect with these… (or they dropped in and out all the time completely disrupting my NV2 network!)
So I was forced to also use 6, 12 and or 18Mb rates. Now these ´weak´ stations connected but to my surprise I saw them attempting to connect to the higher 48M (=24M) rate as well… and at the same time the ´high demand´ client station fell back to the lower rates with lower CCQ on idle links. (As soon as data starts to flow it picks up the higher rate again but it takes a second or so… not ideal.)
As a solution attempt I tried to limit the CPE’s now to their needed connection rates. But to my disappointment it doesn’t change a thing.
So here I (and MT) still have a field to play with to find the best settings to serve both sort of clients best.
I tried to deprive the higher rates of the low signal clients. Maybe I should try to deprive the high demand clients of the lower rates…? Or maybe this is not a good idea at all! How will the AP be if it has to pick another rate each time another client has to be served?
