Connecting 5009UG+S+ to Cap ax Gen 6 802.11ax Wireless AP (cAPGi-5HaxD2HaxD-US)

I just got the following equipment for my home network. It's very impressive equipment. I seem to be struggling to get the wireless working. I've got Winbox installed, Winbox can see both the router and the AP. I was able to flash the firmware on both the router and AP to the latest firmware. I do have some questions...

  1. Can the 5009UG+S+ provide power via POE to the wireless AP, or do I need to also plug the AP into power?

  2. Currently Winbox will launch two separate windows of it; one for 5009UG+S+, and the second one for the AP. Can I import the AP into the same Winbox as the 5009UG+S+ router or does it have to be separate?

  3. I've heard you can import the AP into 5009UG+S+ using Capsman. What's the best way to do that?

  4. One of the video says you can enable Capsman on the AP or you can just create your own wireless on the AP. I've been watching the following YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=taQ70m0DVYA , but the guy in the video completely removes the defaults and creates his own. Is it easier to use Capsman or do what the guy in the video does?

  5. Is there a good video that explains configuring the AP for wireless internet connections?

  1. I don’t think that the RB5009 has a PoE port so you’ll need an injector if you position the AP in a spot that doesn’t have easy access to a power socket. Something like:

  2. Winbox is always a single window per device (in the category of that’s just the way it is :slight_smile: )
  3. Technically, you’re not « importing » the AP, but you configure the wifi settings you want on the RB5009 using CAPsMAN and then tell the AP to connect to CAPsMAN on the RB5009 and it will auto-configure itself based on what it’s told. This gets around the single window issue (a little bit) in that you’ll see the state of the wifi connections on the RB5009. That way if you setup another AP on the other side of the house, it can also use that configuration without any specific configuration other than pointing in at the CAPsMAN server
  4. Generally, I’ve had best luck with CAPsMAN configured APs by starting the AP with a completely blank configuration, setting up the VLANs (or not as required) and letting CAPsMAN take care of the Wifi configuration.
  5. Generally speaking you want the AP to be as stupid as possible so no firewalling, no routing, no NAT or anything else as that is handled by the RB5009 as the router. Once the wireless connection is made from a client machine it’s directly on the internal network and the RB5009 handles the internet routing etc. Otherwise you end up with things like double-NAT and other horrors that are impossible de debug.
