Console connection

I have a USB-serial cable which I want to test
I am trying to connect with this to the Mikrotik Router OS using Hyper Terminal
but can not connect to it. I have followed the examples found on wiki but can’t get
it to work.

At this point I am not sure if it the cable not working, or is it me doing it wrong.
Mikrotik is installed on an Pentium IV PC with two serial ports
If any one can give the right way to connect to it …

Thank you, Toni

Are you using a “null modem” adapter?

The problem is that when i try to connect directly through a null-modem cable from my physical Com port to the one of the computer having ROS i connect perfectly.
Instead, when i try to connect through a USBtoCOM adapter using the same computers and the same Null-Modem cable the connection doesn’t work. What am i missing here?Is there a special brand of USBtoCOM adapter that i can use to connect with my Laptop that doesn’t have a physical COM ??

Three of our notebooks don’t have built-in serial ports so we are using USB adapters. Many brands have worked; our fav is a Radio Shack that has a cable extention past the electronics dongle.

none of our laptops have serial ports, so here we all use usb->serial adapters and they always work fine. what operating system do you use? are you sure your terminal program is set up correctly?

I am trying it on XP with Hyperterminal.
I put 9600, 8bits, 1 stop, Hardware
which works fine with the normal Null Modem Cable
With the USB to serial instead it is not working.
So I am sure (almost) that it is the USB adapter not working.

One more thing. The Usb adapter ends with a mail serial connector
so to connect it to the COM port of PC, which is a male too,
i put the null modem cable which has both female ends.
Can it be that it is converting the pins?

That is the correct config. Have you looked in device manager? Some of these can be forced to a different com port that will work better i.e. com2 instead of com14…

Yes, I looked there too and made the neccessary config.
Still Not wotking :frowning:
I am going to check for other USB adapter in the shops here

some of these might require drivers

 yes ofcourse, drivers installed
