Controling usage at YachtClub

Wondering if someone could point me in the right direction here.

We got a RB750G at the yacht club I belong too. We have been slowly been putting up Wi-Fi around the docks (320 slips) the radios used are a combination of two Ubiquiti units one for the backbone to transmit to the docks and other one to send out a signal at 802.11b/g. We have a number of people who live on their boats over the summer and visitors coming from outside of the club.

At the club house we have the backbone radio connected to the internet connect we have coming in. I want to place the RB750 just before the backbone link to control bandwidth.

I would like to limit having people download torrents all month long or hog up the bandwidth from the rest of the people watching youtube/netflixs. But I would like to have it transparent without having to have the user’s login. The current security is just a simple WPA2 password on each AP.

I found http://forum.mikrotik.com/t/a-working-dynamic-bandwidth-script-test-it/19132/1 to be something I like to do, but from what I gather it’s overall throttling instead of individual users which I would prefer.
I’m running the latest version of RouterOS(5.18). Is there a better solution than using a script like the one above?

Thanks.

Based off of your requirements, PCQ would be the way to go to queue the individual users down to a hard data cap, that will scale down and up as needed. Also you will want to keep a very close eye on the CPU of the 750, it may not have enough power to handle it all, you might need to jump up to a 450G sooner or later, or even an 1100/1200 depending on how much use you see.

Thanks Feklar, I will have a look tonight/over the weekend. At most I wouldn’t think we have 20 user at any one time on the system.

If you create a hotspot server where the user only clicks on login to reach Internet, the hotspot server will create pcq automatically for you.

Alternatively you can use the trial feature of the hotspot and limit users to a certain speed, uptime or data limit each day.
