Controller Bridge and Port Extender: removed from RouterOS since v7.18.

I have a CCR2004 router, which in turn is connected to a CRS310 switch. I’ve also a network of wired AX3’s, connected to the switch taking advantage of the faster ports. It’s always seemed odd that there wasn’t a simple way of managing the extra switch ports, or any of the others on other devices, while managing the router, in other words I have to log into both the router and switch and all the other devices to individually see and manage each port. I do have everything running through the bridge on the router, so DHCP is done centrally for everything on the network, but of course all the leases distributed centrally appear through the corresponding router port, sfp-spfplus2, for example.
I’ve now found the ‘Controller Bridge and Port Extender’, but it seems too late as the help pages seem to suggest this function has been removed from OS7.18.

What’s replaced it, if anything? Or is there another way of achieving the same?

Thanks in advance.

Nothing replaced it. The concept is a (very poor) approximation to switch stacking with a grave drawback: ports on the “port extender” device are run by “controller bridge” … including all traffic (so traffic handled by two ports on same port extender will pass the CB/PE interconnect twice). With further consequence: if CB device happens to fail, PEs will stop forwarding traffic as well (because they will be brain-less at that point).

So what you’d probably want to see is some kind of central network management tool … MT doesn’t have one, there are 3rd party tools which support configuring ROS devices.

Thank you for replying. Sounds like it’s a red herring then. Back to individual management, I guess. I am in awe of the capabilities of these boxes, but I do wish sometimes they were a little more ‘numpty’ friendly!
