Copper multi Gig SFP+ Module

Hello together,

I have an CSR317-1G-16S+, and I am looking for SFP+ RJ45 copper modules which can be used with 10G, 2.5G, 1G and 1M.
The problem is, that I must be able to set the link speed on the router and be able to read out the negotiated link speed.

I have tested the:

  • Mikrotik S+RJ10, which reports the link speed, but can not set the link speed and gets warm.
  • Ubuquiti UACC-CM-RJ45-MG, which always reports 10G as link speed (in my opinion this is the speed between the module and the switch, but no the wire speed) and the link speed can not be set

Can anybody recommend other modules?

The reason is that I want to use the CRS317 as a test device for our own developed device.

I think the best option would be a CRS304-4XG-IN with native RJ45 10G ports.

The problem is that both RouterOS and the SFP+ module's firmware have to agree on the commands sent over the I2C interface, and you might draw a blank on that.

I think you are right, but other switches does not match our other needs and we already have bought the switches :frowning:

Oh. Multiple? Then you are really screwed.

If you need more ports then the CRS312-4C+8XG-RM would be your only other option.

I would buy some Chinese SFP+ modules from "known" manufacturers like 10Gtek etc. and test them.

According to some YouTubers, some of them seem to be able to do what you want. But it's luck to find the matching one.

Another option would be buying a dumb switch with some SFP+ Ports - there are some available. Then use dedicated SPF(+) modules for whatever speed you need.

Another thought: Do you inted to fill all 16 SFP+ slots with RJ45 10G transceivers?
Don't do this. They will overheat. Better only use every other slot for RJ45 transceivers and use the slots between for nothing or only for things like DAC or optical transceivers, which don't get as hot.

In switches with real built-in RJ45 10G ports the power and cooling requirements have already been accounted for. And often they use multi-port transceiver chips wthich tend to be more energy efficient.
