Core or Edge Router (CCR1072 vs CCR2116)

Hi,

We have multiple routers in our network, but for specific choice i am looking for some advice.

I have a CCR1072 which is doing edge (BGP) tasks and core tasks.
I want to split this so 1 router for edge and a second for core task.

On this specific router we have:

  • 4 Full Table BGP Sessions from transit + 1 Full table BGP from other internal router
  • Multiple BGP peering sessions on different exchanges.
  • OSPF + VRRP

I am looking to buy a CCR2116 but what is the best function for both?

Existing CCR1072 as edge or core?
New CCR2116 as edge or core?

Depends what you want it to do. I “believe” that the 2116 will have faster BGP convergence, but I don’t have any experience with it personally. I might suggest putting the newer device in the position which you don’t feel like replacing anytime soon, and then budget for a second one to replace the 1072 if/when it decides it’s not up to the task anymore.
