Coronavirus quarantine impact on network traffic

Hi,

can anyone share some data on how mass quarantine affects your network traffic? Perhaps we have someone operating in northern Italy for example?

I’m afraid the demand of video streaming service from people isolated at homes will put quite a burden on our infrastructures..

At MIX (Milan Internet eXchange) there is no real visual indicator concerning this.

https://www.mix-it.net/en/statistiche/

But perhaps the coming days it can become more clear or something.

The new area is not completely sealed, and the overwhelming majority of people are not isolated.

You should rather think about the many who stay at home by choice.

Now you see the traffic levels at the MIX climbing the last days/week, so it is definitely visible.
Italy is definitely taking a beating, other EU countries will follow to some degree probably in max ± 2 weeks.

DE-CIX hit a world record yesterday: 9.1 Tbps.

The main Swiss ecommerce site has seen display sales double for two days in a row now.

More than likely the biggest contributor to the surge in traffic is Call of Duty free battle royal game (Blizzard) and a massive ~80GB update on Rainbow Six Siege (Steam).

I think that released in the evening but I experienced some big slowdowns during the day (one was amazon.com) .

The EU urged streaming services to reduce bandwidth consumption.

So Netflix will be cutting bitrates in Europe for 30 days, lowering their usage by 25%. Blu-ray time (when wasn’t it?).

I noticed more and bigger slowdowns in the last days.

Xbox Live and Nintendo Online collapsed this week.

The EU also warned telcos not to discriminate against individual content providers.

Cloudflare posted a blog about traffic changes:

Amazon is hiring 100000 workers and prioritizing stocking of essential products.

Walmart is hiring 150000 and giving bonuses.

Costco is not accepting returns of hoarded items.

I saw some UK supermarkets hiring a total of more than 40000.

Some stores have seniors-only hours.

In Switzerland they must allow for ten square meters per person and people have to clean their hands when entering.

Xbox Live down again.

I suspect more the servers than the network in the issues I talked about.

A reminder that you can put Steam in offline mode. Many games also allow you to play this way.

Things missing:

  • “Offline mode” filter
  • Negative filters
  • Sort by download/expanded size
  • 9.5mm 2.5" hard drives bigger than 2TB

It seems UK Azure is full.

MS Teams went down the other day.

Some other kind of traffic:

  • The French got some adapters for the A400M from the UK so that they can transfer 4 ICU patients per flight. The A330/A310 MRTT can take 6 in the most serious condition. C-160, three. C-295, three. CN-235, two. C-27, two. C-130, two. C-135, six. C-17, nine. Falcon 900, one. Falcon 2000, two. Challenger 6xx, two. Learjet 31/35/36/55, one. Learjet 45XR/60, two. Do 328, two.
  • They are also using TGVs.
