CRS112-8P-4S-IN - To Buy or Not to Buy (in 2021)

I’m about to pull the trigger on a CRS112-8P-4S-IN, but I still have a couple of questions in mind:

  1. Would you bet on MikroTik releasing an updated version of this model within the next two years?
  2. How much additional power does each S-RJ01 module draw during idle?
  3. Is the idle power consumption comparable to the version without PoE

I wanted to simplify my home network, and this switch was the only one with POE and rack mount (affordable), so it was almost the only choice for me.
It has limited memory and CPU, and power consumption depends on what you will attach it to, but I think it’s a good compromise. Would I buy it in 2021? Yes, I just did.

Answer to Question 1: updated version of this model within the next two years

Only Mikrotik can answer this Question without lying =)
I would bet 5€, that the CRS112-8P-4S-IN will still be here in 24 Months !
If you are looking for a nice fanless PoE Switch, It is no mistake to buy one in 2021

So it turns out i don't have the proper equipment to measure small Power usage...
Never the less, I used my only calibrated Multimeter (Grossen Metrawatt Secutest Base10)
to mesure the combined Power draw of the

  • CRS112-8P-4S-IN**
  • Power-Adapter DQS961-280340-3 ( DC28V @ 3.40A)

Kudos to @ConnyMercier for bothering to do the measurements … but those measurements are questionable at least. From figures I assume measurements were done on the high-voltage side of PA (hence low PF figures) which includes also low conversion efficiency of PA under low load. The measurements should have been done on the DC side of PA.

But the Mesurement can help you understand,
what the real cost of running the switch could be…

For exemple:
6Wh * 24h * 365d = 52 kWh a Year
52 kWh * 0,32 € /kWh = 16,81€ a Year
