I have a customer who has a Netgear router and two TP-Link 8-port switches. I want to replace this equipment with MikroTik equipment. I need more ‘diagnostics’ in the equipment, to determine what’s happening in the network, and I need to set up bandwidth limiting and prioritization based on IP address. I need at least 12 LAN ports.
I could use an RB2011 and a CRS125 switch, but from what I’m understanding, it looks like I can just use a CRS125 switch with it set up as a router/switch and achieve what I need without having the extra RB2011.
Are there any ‘downsides’ to using one CRS125 switch, instead of both an RB2011 and a CRS125, in a system like what I’ve described here?
From a performance standpoint, I think the CRS125 would work fine for both router and switch.
Thanks for the help. This is exactly what I needed to know. I couldn’t see why this wouldn’t work, but I just wanted to make sure that I wasn’t overlooking something, since I’m so new to working with MikroTik.
if you have the budget buy a ccr 1009 for routing and crs 226 for switching, connect them with 10gigabit optical fiber.
of course the crs 125 is clearly the cheaper option, but be conscious the performance limit will be at least 10% lower than 2011 when routing because of cpu used for managing switch chip.
porting a configuration from rb2011 to crs 125 using switching features can take some time is not a copy and paste task, so take provision of enough time to do the config.
put in balance budget and possible future needs or upgrade path, take in count the announced coming soon products (rb 3011).
CRS 226 its a far more powerfull and future proof switch than crs125 but has a less powerfull cpu so routing will be worst, in english crs 226 its a better switch than crs 125 but is a worst router.
I mostly am using the CRS125-24G-1S in places where I need a RB2011 worth of power, but just needed more gigabit ports than the 2011 offers. I have also used it as a 24 port switch with some cool features. I agree that the 226 has more powerful switching…
Just depends what you need and how much you want to spend.
