CRS317-1G-16S+RM: CWDM/DWDM SFP+ optics?

Hello,

can I use any CWDM/DWDM SFP+ optics with the CRS317-1G-16S+RM? Which one would you recommend for 10km?

Regards

It depends, for non Mikrotik hardware, see supported hardware.

S+31DLC10D is the Mikrotik product for 10G - 10Km (single mode).

CRS317 hasn’t been included yet on Mikrotik SFP Compatibility Matrix, but being both Mikrotik products I bet it will support it.

Most sfp manufacturers and distributors provide samples.
Request a sample and test.
I have personally not come across any that do not work…

yeah, CWDM/DWDM SFP+ optics would not work for CRS317-1G-16S+RM. But you can use S+2332LC10D for 10G network connection. Bidirectional SFP+ 10G module kit. Kit contains two SFP+ modules that can be used as pair to achieve operating data rate up to 10Gbps for distances up to 10km on single optical cable.

As long as SFP/SFP+ modules are made for right standard and comply with SFP MSA they should be usable in our hardware. Please read product manual about compatibility with other manufacturer devices. CWDM/DWDM SFP+ optics should work in CRS317-1G-16S+RM.

Thank you!

mikrotik its aware of CDWM importance

Where do you get this updates ?
Thanks in advance!

i have DWDM ER SFP+ working in there, but it also works with DWDM ZR optics:

Looks like Mikrotik now sell CWDM SFP/SFP+ - https://mikrotik.com/product/s_c47dlc10d

The FS.com 1310’s are listed as working on the wiki page, so I can’t see why the CWDM versions of those wouldn’t also work.

there would have been issues prior 6.31 to be honest. normal (gray) SFPs have different unit code than C/DWDM ones. so mikrotik devices couldn’t even detect them.

https://www.finisar.com/sites/default/files/resources/AN_2030_DDMI_for_SFP_Rev_E2.pdf - see page 5

regular SFP/SFP+ is 03h, whereas DWDM SFP is 0Bh.
i asked for this and the guys @ mikrotik nailed it in 2 weeks. v6.31rc16 was the 1st version to support them. then in the next rebuild they added full ddmi support to it.

and i talk about DWDM ones with 50 or 100GHz grid, not BiDir ones, that are commonly referred as “WDM” but in general are just 1310/1490 (or 1550)nm gray bidirectional xceivers.

well, you can also use OADMs, and just a single optical cable, so you can drop/add wavelengths on each pop. that is the fiber topology will be just a line or a ring, but you can have each node (or more) connected as star or dual-star logical topology. we do this since years, but we do it with DWDM, as you can get much more channels into it, say 40 instead of 8 or 12. but in general it is pretty much the same, full passive optical stuff. and everything is dirt cheap. and it is speed independent: you can have 1G/10G/(later 25 or 50G)/100G if you wish. albeit with 10G chromatic dispersion becomes a problem on 30+km distances.
