CRS317-1G-16S+ temperature and fans

Hi, I bought a CRS317-1G-16S+ because it was advertised as a silent device:
“The unit has dual redundant power supplies and passive cooling case, so it’s completely silent - for hot environments two redundant fans will automatically keep the system cool if needed.”

The router is installed in my home office (currently 24degree), and the fans are permanently running with 4000 rpm.
The temp sensor of the device shows always between 40 and 41 degree.

Currently only 4 of the 16 ports are connected and only 2 of them really used.

The support was not able to give me an answer :frowning: Therefore I’m asking here.
Is this normal or is the temp sensor defect?
Or ist 24 degree already a “hot environment”?

Thanks for your help.

Hi,
yes, that’s normal. Forget about the idea of this device being silent.
Even with 20°C room temperature on idle with no SFP the fans kick in regularly.
Once you start to populate some SFPs and put traffic on the box it even gets hotter of course.

Edit: Oh just remembered, when I got the CRS317 last fall/winter the environment temperature was lower and with the first firmware versions it was indeed possible to run this box silently at least in idle conditions. That however was a bug, I guess. The CPU went slightly over 40°C without the fans. Menanwhile however there were some firmware fixes regarding the fans and this changed.

Thank you for your answer.
I’m a little bit disappointed now, becaus exactly this device is advertised as silent and I replaced my old switch because the fans were to loud for me in my home office…

Best regards, Alfred
