CRS317 - want SwOS, but won't boot

Hi all,

Just taken hold of various Mik kit - one being a CRS317 as I want to use the 10G interface capability. I have no requirement for any L3 services, I just want switching.

I have taken it out of the box, booted up, plugged into eth1, logged in via the GUI to 192.168.88.1, selected next boot to “SwOS”, then rebooted…

… fans spin up, but don’t calm down and have no access to 192.168.88.1 - the only way I can get back into the box is a factory reset.

Do I have to manually upload a SwOS image to the box first? I have read somewhere that it should have a basic one built in.

Thanks, Brixo

SwOS is preloaded already on the switch. When booted into SwOS, are you trying to access 192.168.88.1 through your Web browser or Winbox? Is it possible for you to attach serial cable to the switch and post the output of it when booting into SwOS?

We have tried via the console cable and via the WebGUI (when booted into RouterOS)… but on reboot, it appears to loop… then on the console there is no option to boot permanently to SwOS.

Basically, it never boots into SwOS!

We have EXACTLY the same issue with a CRS326-24G-2S+RM - we ask it to boot into SwOS, but it ignores us!

Can you please post the serial output. Without any actual information, it is very hard to guess what is happening there.

We have tried to XMODEM SwOS 2.6 to it, still complains and will not boot into SwOS.

It is booted successfully in SwOS. You should be able to access the switch using http://192.168.88.1 in case the 192.168.88.0/24 network is reachable from your computer.

Many thanks. We were expecting something in the console to tell us that “you are now in SwOS”.

Only problem now is that we cannot set any interface to 10G! We have upgraded to 2.6 also.

Using S+DA0001 between a CRS317 and CCR1072; the CRS317 does not recognise the SFPs and it only allows you to set the interface to 10/100/1G and no option for 10G.

This should be a lot easier!!!

It should already work with auto-negotiation enabled on both sides.

Sadly not :frowning:

We now have the CRS317 running SwOS 2.6, and the CCR1072 running RouterOS 6.41.rc47.

On the CCR1072 we have tried auto-neg and manually setting (in console only, as there is not 10G option in the Webfig) to 10G… still not working.

There is no option to FORCE the CRS317 to 10G on that interface.

Basically, we have tried auto-neg on both ends, but won’t come up. If we set both ends to 1G/Full, we get UP.

UPDATE:

If all devices are running RouterOS, the 10G comes up immediately.

Should SwOS 2.6 support 10G? If so, it doesn’t appear to.

It did (the 10th line of text):

SwOS v2.0p

And after you updated the firmware:

SwOS v2.6

Hello Brixo,

So on both CRS317 and CRS326 you have latest SwOS updated and units do not link up on 10Gbps against CCR1072 who have latest release-candidate version? Have you tried some simple steps: enable/disable interface, reinsert DAC, power cycle device? Do you have 10Gbps link between CRS317 and CRS326? Please give us DAC serial number.

That is correct.

If everything uses ROS, it works. If you have any device with SwOS, you cannot get 10G.

I have tried several S+DACs too, as well as reboot, enable/disable.

I will get you the serial numbers of everything next week (just left the office for a long weekend).

It’s been a painful (but slightly enjoyable) taking a Cisco environment and trying to make it work in Mikrotik world!!

I can confirm I am having this same issue: have S+DA0001 and CRS317. SFP shows as “unknown” and refuses to link up at 10Gbps.

Glad I am not going crazy!

I have had to settle for 1G as I needed to install it quickly and didn’t have time to boot into RouterOS and explore the minefield of doing L2 on it! Not ideal and a bit disappointing.

I have similar issue my Mikrotik CRS326 can’t boot to swos. it display as below.

loading kernel… kernel not found
trying bootp protocol… failed
kernel loading failed

Pls comment.

Thanks

I have the same problem with a CRS 317-1G16S+. I have another one of the same that boots just fine to SwOS, but the new one doesn’t boot at all. The first time it boots it says kernel loading failed. Then it gets stuck in a boot loop. When I enter the boot setup, it hangs after a few actions making it impossible to select another OS. When I press the reset button also nothing happens.

Hi!
I have a similar problem with CRS 317-1G16S +.
In RouterOS everything works fine, SwOS does not load.
When trying to switch to SwOS, after reboot see the following in console :

trying bootp protocol… failed
kernel loading failed

How to make SwOS workable?
