CRS328-4C-20S-4S+RM : Crash when using multiple CWDM Modules used

Hello,
We are experiencing a strange issue with these switches.

We operate a small Fiber ISP and use 10 CRS328 for FTTO/FTTB access.

Most links works normally but some switches have been less reliable:

  • Ports randomly stopped working (no link/no negotiation), even after reboot, we moved the clients on another port on the same switch and it works fine, the faulty port come back a few weeks later when we try again
  • Fans would be spinning at strange speeds (sometimes not at all, sometimes way too fast) while temperatures are normal

We never had any issues in the lab, only in production.

We tried SwitchOS and RouterOS.

So we tried a lot of things to find the reason and we think we found one.
After moving some clients around one switch refused to boot (after it crashed), we replaced it but the replacement had the same issue.
It booted fine but started to fail when we inserted more SFP modules (80km CWDM 1G).
The symptoms where:

  • PSU 1 and 2 default (no more detail)
  • Ports that where previously working started cycling randomly DOWN then immediately UP
  • Fans would start spinning too fast
  • Switch would not boot if rebooted

We managed to reproduce the issue in the lab but other equipments (from other manufacturers like Ubiquiti and Huawei) are not affected in the exact same condition.

My guess was that these SFP modules might draw too much power but this power draw is not reported (might not be measured ?) and the total power consumption does not exceed the specs.

I have opened a ticket earlier today but maybe somebody here have a clue about what is going on.
